A Triumphant Return After a Tough Ordeal
The recent weeks have been a trying time for Pope Francis, who battled a severe case of bilateral pneumonia. The pontiff, who is 88 years old [[2]], faced significant health challenges during his extended stay at Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome. Now, he is back in Vatican City, a testament to his resilience and the dedication of his medical team.
The Doctor’s Perspective: “We Feared the Worst”
Professor Sergio Alfieri, a Roman surgeon with a long-standing relationship with Pope Francis, having previously operated on him in 2021 and 2023, shared his experience of the Pope’s recent hospitalization. Alfieri, visibly relieved, admitted the gravity of the situation. Excited? Of course… It was a long journey, with ups and downs. On two occasions we feared that he died.
He emphasized that the 38 days were particularly intense, witnessing the Pope’s daily struggle against the illness.
As a doctor, every time you can cure a patient and let him out of the hospital, it’s very nice. And then – as a believer – the emotion of seeing the Holy Father who after so many days appeared from the window of the Gemelli Polyclinic was, I must say, indescribable. Above all by remembering how bad it was.
Professor Sergio Alfieri
Alfieri highlighted the collaborative nature of Pope Francis as a patient, dispelling rumors of the Pope insisting on an early return to Santa Marta. It has always been a very collaborative, helpful patient. An exemplary patient. We resigned it because there are the conditions so that it can leave the hospital.
The medical team at Gemelli polyclinic confirmed that his discharge was based purely on medical grounds.
Openness and the Pope’s Wishes
In a move towards complete transparency, Professor Alfieri revealed that Pope Francis personally oversaw the release of medical bulletins, even encouraging the inclusion of perhaps sensitive details. The Pope wants us to say everything, that we do not hide any details of his health conditions.
This commitment to openness reflects a desire to keep the faithful informed and connected during times of uncertainty.
Looking Ahead: Continued Care and Recovery
While Pope Francis has been discharged, his recovery journey continues. He will now be under the care of his personal health assistant, Massimiliano Strappetti, and Vatican doctors. Professor Alfieri and his team remain ready to assist if needed. The Pope’s recent health scare underscores the importance of ongoing medical care and vigilance, especially for individuals in positions of global leadership.
