FOX Sports Elevates Super Bowl LIX Coverage with LIDAR-powered Augmented Reality
FOX Sports is set to captivate audiences at Super Bowl LIX with a cutting-edge approach to augmented reality (AR) graphics. By incorporating an advanced tracking system, the network aims to provide a uniquely immersive viewing experience that goes beyond traditional broadcasts.
Seven Cameras Working in Harmony
To achieve this ambitious goal, FOX Sports has deployed seven high-definition cameras across the broadcast venue. These include the iconic low SkyCam, the comprehensive All-22, and two versatile 24-foot techno jibs strategically placed on the field. Each camera is meticulously calibrated to ensure flawless synchronization and display of AR graphics throughout the game.
FOX Sports has a control room in the production compound dedicated to its augmented reality graphic efforts.
The Power of Partnership
Collaborating with AE Live, FOX Sports’ internal graphics team has brought together a dynamic array of AR graphics designed to engage and inform viewers. This partnership ensures that the network can push the boundaries of traditional coverage, featuring a significant opening graphic and a standout moment around 6:12 p.m. ET.
Kudan’s LIDAR Tracking System
A critical aspect of FOX Sports’ AR enhancements is its partnership with Kudan, a pioneer in software-based LIDAR tracking technology. Zac Fields, SVP, Graphic Technology and Integration at FOX Sports, explains the rationale behind this collaboration:
“We started working with them before the season on a LIDAR system. The aim was to develop a more stable and robust tracking system suitable for an open stadium environment,” Fields stated.
Unlike the previous radio-frequency (RF)-based beacon system, which posed challenges for long-term sustainability and accuracy, the LIDAR approach creates a detailed 3D map of the stadium. This enables the cameras to recognize their position in space relative to the map, ensuring precise and consistent tracking.
Challenges and Solutions
The SkyCam, despite its pivotal role in broadcasting, faces inherent challenges. Fields elaborates on these difficulties:
“One of the issues with SkyCam is the potential slack in the lines and the impact of wind gusts on its stability,” he said. “The LIDAR system significantly mitigates these challenges, keeping AR elements locked in place and preventing any unwanted movement or ‘swimming’ effect.”
This advanced technology not only enhances the game broadcast but also ensures a seamless experience during pregame segments, including the elaborate Bourbon Street set.

FOX Sports has built an AR/XR booth where talent appears as if they are in an extended virtual environment.
Extended Virtual Environments
FOX Sports has also constructed an augmented reality and extended reality (AR/XR) booth. This innovative space has enabled talent to appear as if they are part of a larger, virtual environment. Fields emphasized the importance of this development:
“This set extension technology seamlessly blends real and virtual elements, creating a more dynamic and engaging broadcast experience,” Fields explained.
Months of Development and Testing
The remarkable AR presentation at Super Bowl LIX is the result of extensive preparation and rigorous testing over several months. Fields discussed the meticulous process involved:
“We began building this system well ahead of the season,” he notes. “Our focus was on creating a fully integrated AR package that complements the broader animation and graphics used across all FOX Sports broadcasts.”
The Future of Sports Broadcasting
With this deployment, FOX Sports sets a new standard in sports broadcasting, highlighting the potential of AR and advanced tracking technologies. The integration of LIDAR tracking and set extension technology not only enriches the game coverage but also opens up future possibilities for even more immersive experiences.
As the landscape of sports entertainment continues to evolve, FOX Sports’ commitment to innovation showcases a forward-thinking approach that keeps fans eagerly anticipating the next big event.
