the Star of Greccio: A Franciscan Film’s Journey from Rome to the World

A new film exploring the life of Francis of Assisi and the origins of the Nativity scene, “The Star of Greccio,” is making waves internationally after its debut in Rome.

From Rome to Global Acclaim: The Unveiling of “The Star of Greccio”

Following its Roman premiere, The Star of Greccio, a film centered around Francis of assisi and the creation of the first Nativity scene, is set to captivate audiences worldwide. The film recently had a special screening in Rome at the Municipio Rome 3 Montesacro, Piazza Sempione 15. The event featured insightful commentary from medieval scholar alfonso Marini, director and critic Eddie da Silva, director Arnaldo Casali, and assistant director and editor luca Manaioli.

A Fresh Viewpoint on a Timeless Figure

Directed by Arnaldo Casali, the film stars friar Alessandro Brustenghi, a renowned tenor, in his acting debut. What sets this production apart is its unique casting: Brustenghi, along with fellow Franciscan friar Angelo Gatto, bring authenticity to their roles. Gatto also served as a producer on the film.

The film distinguishes itself by drawing directly from Franciscan sources, offering a fresh and humorous portrayal of Saint Francis. This approach aims to reveal a side of the saint often overlooked – his role as a jester of God, an actor, director, singer, and comedian. This interpretation aligns with past accounts that depict Francis as a charismatic and engaging figure.

Notable Performances and Critical Reception

The cast includes Cecilia di Giuli, known for her role in A Daughter, as jacopa dei Settesoli, alongside Mauro Cardinali (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), Giordano Agrusta (Laf Building), and comedians Francesco Salvi and Fabio Bussotti. Bussotti’s return to the role of Friar Leone comes 35 years after his Silver Ribbon win for Francesco.

Liliana Cavani, director of the earlier Francesco, praised The Star of greccio for its originality and strong central idea, noting its almost prayerful quality and innovative style.

A truly original and beautiful story. They say that this is a homemade film, but what matters are not the means available, is the idea. Here the idea is there and is strong. The film is almost a prayer and this is capturing: you are willingly inside and is very innovative in style.

International Recognition and Future Screenings

Prior to its Roman showing, The Star of Greccio was previewed at the Terni Film Festival and screened in Greccio, the Vatican (presented to Pope Francis), Poland (Sacrofilm of Zamosc), Armenia (Fresh Film Festival), Trento (Festival Religion Today), and todi (“Freeing Beauty”).

Currently available on Amazon Prime Video, the film is now heading to the Kuala Lumpur Film Awards in Malaysia. This autumn, it will compete at the Agaelic Film Festival in California, USA.

Insights from Experts: Alfonso Marini and Eddie da Silva

The Rome screening benefited from the expertise of Alfonso Marini, a respected scholar of Francis of Assisi and former professor of medieval history at “La Sapienza” University. Marini’s contributions to Franciscan studies include his work as a curator of the latest edition of Franciscan Sources and author of several books, such as Francesco d’Assisi the merchant of the kingdom.

Eddie da Silva, a director and film critic, also lent his perspective to the event. Da Silva, known for his short films and music videos, co-directs the online magazine 6 and a half.
