Community Backing Fuels Maryland’s American Games Ambitions
Maryland’s athletes are preparing to make a splash at the upcoming American Games in Dallas, scheduled for June 20-22. Bolstered by significant financial support from the Korean American community, spearheaded by the Dallas American Squadron, the Maryland team is setting ambitious goals.
Golf Association receives donation”>Overwhelming Support Exceeds Expectations
Oh Se-baek,Chairman of the Funny Korea Maryland Sports Association,expressed immense gratitude for the community’s excited backing. The donation exceeded $50,000 due to the hot support of several Korean organizations and companies. Everyone is cheering for Maryland’s representative teams and gathering the general devotion.
This outpouring of support underscores the community’s commitment to fostering athletic excellence and representing Maryland on a national stage.
Expanded Team and Increased Participation
The surge in support has enabled Maryland to expand its delegation. Chairman Oh noted, The number of youths and female athletes has been added in various sports, so the number of teams including family cheering teams has increased from 150 to 200.
This growth reflects a broader engagement with sports within the community and a commitment to inclusivity.
Currently, youth participation in sports is seeing a nationwide boost. According to a recent study by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), participation rates are up by 7% compared to pre-pandemic levels, highlighting a renewed interest in athletics among young people.
Targeting Top Finishes in Key Sports
Maryland will be represented by a total of nine athletes and executives, competing across nine disciplines: soccer, badminton, taekwondo, golf, shooting, tennis, bowling, basketball, and swimming.The team has identified swimming, badminton, shooting, and golf as key areas for potential gold medal wins, with an overall goal of securing a top-five ranking.
Fundraising and Send-Off Ceremony
To further support the American Games effort, the Sports Association is hosting a fundraising event at the Musket Ridge Golf Club in Myersville on May 18th (Sunday). A send-off ceremony for the athletes is scheduled for June 8th (Sunday) at the Philippian Church in Hannover.
