A recent controversy has emerged within Indonesian politics, pitting the ruling party, PDIP (Partai Demokrasi Indonesia Perjuangan), against its former leader, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). The dispute centers on Megawati Soekarnoputri, current Ketua Umum of PDIP, instructing PDIP-affiliated regional leaders to skip a government-organized retreat in Magelang.
Megawati’s Instruction and Its Context
Megawati issued an instruction in Surat Nomor 7294/IN/DPP/II/2025, requesting all PDIP regional leaders to postpone their travel to the retreat in Magelang, which is scheduled for February 21-28, 2025. This directive came shortly after the arrest of Hasto Kristiyanto, the Secretary-General of PDIP, who had been undergoing checks related to a fraud investigation.
“Diinstruksikan kepada seluruh kepala daerah dan wakil kepala daerah PDI Perjuangan, sebagai berikut: 1. Kepala daerah dan wakil kepala daerah untuk menunda perjalanan yang akan mengikuti retret di Magelang pada tanggal 21-28 Februari 2025,” stated the directive.
Additionally, Megawati requested that regional leaders remain in communication with PDIP if they were already en route to Magelang and to await further instructions from the party’s leadership.
“2. Tetap berada dalam komunikasi aktif dan standby commander call,” further emphasized Megawati, underscoring the importance of staying connected.
Jokowi’s Response
Jokowi, who previously was a leader within PDIP, took issue with Megawati’s directive. He projected that the retret was an affair of government business, to which he invited all regional leaders, including himself.
“Ini kan urusan pemerintahan, yang diundang kepala daerah, yang mengundang Presiden,” opined Jokowi during his statement.
Jokowi stressed the necessity for regional leaders to participate, considering they were elected to serve the interest of the people, not personal agendas.
“Ya mestinya hadir, datang, karena mereka dipilih oleh rakyat dan untuk kepentingan rakyat, bangsa, dan negara bukan untuk yang lain,” Jokowi reiterated, emphasizing the public duty of the regional leaders.

PDIP’s Defense
In response to Jokowi’s stance, Said Abdullah, the Ketua DPP PDIP Bidang Sumber Daya, maintained that Megawati’s instruction pertained strictly to party affairs.
“Ya ini soal partai lah ya, urusan internal, bukan urusan orang luar,” clarified Said Abdullah.
Said Abdullah remained tight-lipped concerning his immediate duties, simply stating his readiness to follow Megawati’s directives.
“Mudah-mudahan saya dikasih tugas Ibu, ini ada acara, ya oke ya,” he said, summarizing his stance.

Implications of the Dispute
The clash between Jokowi and PDIP highlights the internal tensions within the party as it navigates through internal investigations and leadership decisions. This dispute might affect cooperation between the party and the government, particularly concerning regional matters.
The conflict could also lead to divided loyalties within PDIP, where regional leaders may face pressure from both Jokowi and Megawati’s directives.
Furthermore, it raises questions about the balance between party loyalty and government obligations, as well as the role of Jokowi in regulating PDIP’s actions since his departure from the party.
“The situation exemplifies the complex challenges faced in a multi-party political system where personal and party interests often overlap,” noted political analysts.
Public Reaction and Outlook
The public’s response to this conflict has been diverse. Some observers welcome the transparency and accountability Megawati aims to uphold, while others criticize the potential disruption this could cause in regional governance.
“It is essential for political parties to adhere to internal norms and regulations, even when invited by the government to participate in national affairs,” argued a political commentator.
The dispute has also sparked discussions about the role and influence of political leaders, both within and outside their own parties.
As Jokowi and PDIP navigate through this controversy, the public remains keen on observing how it will unfold and the decisions made by key leaders.
