Khabib Nurmagomedov, Sir Alex Ferguson

A joking Khabib Nurmagomedov turned down an offer of a glass of wine from Sir Alex Ferguson.

On Saturday, former MMA fighter Khabib Nurmagomedov was at Old Trafford to watch Manchester United in action against Everton.

He followed the match from place in the so-called “Executive Box”, in good company of, among others, Sir Alex Ferguson, Usain Bolt and Patrice Evra.

– Can knock you all

In an interview with BBC journalist Shamoon Hafez, Khabib now reveals parts of the conversations that took place between them during the match. Among other things, he was asked by Ferguson if he wanted a glass of wine.

– Everyone knows, all my friends, even those in other religions, that I eat halal and do not drink. Even today, when I was at Old Trafford with Patrice Evra, Usain Bolt and Sir Alex Ferguson, Alex Ferguson asked me about wine, says Khabib.

And continues:

– He likes it and I do not judge him, but I had to explain to him that I did not want it.

– There are two ways to do it: You can be direct and say “no, I am a Muslim and never drink”. Or you can do it the other way, as I did. I told him “this is not good, because if I drink I can beat all of you. This is not a good idea. “

Khabib believes both Bolt and Evra understood that the reason was that he was a Muslim and therefore did not drink alcohol. For Ferguson, on the other hand, Khabib believes that his explanation was the best for the Scot.

– I think Sir Alex Ferguson understood that because he did not want me to knock everyone. So he said “ok, do not drink wine you”.

Big tubStarted

Khabib is considered by many to be one of the best MMA players of all time. The Russian has, among other things, been the UFC champion in lightweight.

The 33-year-old Russian is perhaps best remembered for the title match against Irishman Conor McGregor in Las Vegas in the autumn of 2018. The Russian won the match superiorly on “submission”, but it was the scenes that unfolded after the match that still stole the headlines.

It all ended with a mass fight between representatives from both camps. Khabib was banned for nine months as a result of the incident, but went to a new UFC fight in the autumn of 2019 when he won against Dustin Poirier.

The 33-year-old played his last match in October 2020 when he won against Justin Gaethje. After the match, the Russian made it clear that he had decided to retire as an MMA fighter.

UFC boss Dana White has repeatedly tried to get Khabib to return, but so far to no avail.
