Kayla DiCello Reflects on Her Journey: Recovery, Future Competition, and a Supportive Role at UF
U.S. gymnast Kayla DiCello has not ruled out a return to the competitive elite level. In an interview with Olympics.com on January 31, she shared her thoughts on her current focus and aspirations.
DiCello’s Ambitions for the Future
DiCello expressed that a return to elite competition stays top-of-mind. “That has never left my mind,” she told Olympics.com. For now, her priority lies in regaining her strength and preparing for the upcoming academic year. “Right now, I’m really just focused on getting back, seeing how this first year back in college goes, and then making a decision from there,” she clarified.
Challenges and Medical Journey
The gymnast encountered significant setbacks in late June when she tore her right Achilles tendon during the US Olympic Trials. In December, she underwent surgery to treat a bone spur in her left heel, a condition she has grappled with for three years.
Her rehabilitation is progressing satisfactorily, despite facing delays due to the second surgery. “My rehab is going pretty well. I recently had surgery on my other foot, so I’m probably a little behind… just trying to get the left one to the same level so I can start jumping again,” DiCello elaborated. “Overall, it’s going really well, and I’m really happy with it.
Current and Future Roles with the University of Florida
The University of Florida Gators, currently ranked second in the nation, welcome DiCello as a sophomore despite her injuries. Given her recent multiple surgeries, DiCello opted out of competing this year. However, she views her presence on the team positively, as she can still offer valuable support.
“I was really upset because I couldn’t compete this year, but for me, I think getting the second surgery was something that eased my mind,” she shared. “Now, I feel like I don’t have the added outside pressure of ‘Am I going to compete this year?’ and all that.”
DiCello, a 2021 world all-around bronze medalist and Tokyo 2020 alternate, understands the importance of every member’s role. “I believe that every single person on this team plays a part, no matter what you’re doing,” she stated. “I have just been trying to be somebody who anybody on the team can come to if they need anything.”
Upcoming Event
The Gators are set to face off against No. 4 Utah in a tri-meet hosted by West Virginia University this Sunday at 2 p.m. ET. While DiCello will not be participating, her teammates will strive for success, guided by her unwavering support.
