Could Steve Wilks Be the Next UNC Football Coach?
The University of North Carolina’s coaching vacancy has become a hot topic, with numerous names being thrown around.
Adding fuel to the fire, Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive end Julius Peppers recently took to Twitter, hinting that those making the decision "know who we want" as the next leader of the Tar Heels. While Peppers remained tight-lipped about the specific identity, many believe he’s referring to Steve Wilks.
Wilks in the Running
Wilks, a Charlotte native, has spent the past few years bouncing around the NFL, most recently serving as defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. His impressive resume includes a stint as interim head coach for the Carolina Panthers in 2022, where he went 6-6 over 12 games. He also spent the 2018 season as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.
Given his experience and recent success with the 49ers, Wilks certainly seems like a strong contender for the UNC job. His connection to the Carolina state and his previous head coaching experience make him a particularly appealing candidate for the Tar Heels.
What’s Next for UNC?
While Peppers’ cryptic tweet has generated plenty of buzz, the UNC administration has yet to officially comment on the situation. It seems likely that Wilks will be a serious factor in their decision-making process.
Fans are eagerly awaiting news of the next UNC head coach, and the coming weeks will undoubtedly be filled with speculation and anticipation. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
