John Bateman Claims He Was Scapegoated by Wests Tigers for 2024’s Poor Season
Former Wests Tigers import and England international John Bateman has stepped forward to voice his dissatisfaction with his time at the club, insisting he was unfairly targeted for the team’s underwhelming 2024 season.
Bateman’s Disappointment with Wests Tigers
In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald, Bateman expressed his disappointment. Initially, he hoped to fulfill his remaining Wests Tigers contract but went unheard from the club since July.
Criticism of Club Communication
Bateman criticized the club’s communication strategy, particularly towards addressing rumors of interpersonal conflicts. He believes the club took too long to clarify the relationship between him and coach Benji Marshall.
“When I got to England, I was seeing all these stories [about my relationship with Marshall],” Bateman said. “I was pretty disappointed it wasn’t shut down earlier by the club. Benji came out four months later to say we never had an argument.” He further emphasized that he did not have any confrontations with Marshall or any other players.
Transition to North Queensland Cowboys
In December, Bateman signed a two-year deal with the North Queensland Cowboys. He explained that the last time he spoke to Marshall was during a discussion about potential next steps, including an offer from Warrington.

Following his departure, Bateman didn’t receive further communication from the Wests Tigers, not even when he signed with the Cowboys.
Dissatisfaction with Junior Development
Bateman was also vocal about his concerns regarding the club’s approach to junior development. He felt that he and Luke Brooks were unfairly criticized for the team’s poor performances.
“I wanted the kids to learn. They have a great bunch of kids there. At times, I didn’t feel like they were learning how I wanted them to learn, and I wanted them to get better,” Bateman shared. He referred to Luke Brooks, another player who faced criticism and was made a scapegoat by the club.
“I got a bit of that [feeling like the scapegoat] last year, but we move on. I never regret anything. I wish the club all the best. I still have a lot of good mates at that club.”
Missed Opportunity with Cowboys
Unfortunately for Bateman, he missed the Cowboys’ pre-season trial match against the Dolphins, where they suffered a convincing defeat.
Conclusion
John Bateman’s claims of being unfairly targeted by the Wests Tigers shed light on the internal dynamics and communication issues within the club. His experience highlights the importance of transparency and timely communication in maintaining a healthy team environment.
If Bateman’s assertions are accurate, they suggest a significant misalignment between player management and strategic focus on junior player development.
Bateman’s transition to the Cowboys marks a new chapter for him, and his ongoing relationship with the Wests Tigers remains a topic of interest.
