The Enduring Magic of Harry Potter: Jason Isaacs Reflects on the Franchise
A Confession from Lucius Malfoy Himself
Jason Isaacs, the actor renowned for his portrayal of the villainous Lucius Malfoy in six of the Harry Potter films, has some surprising insights to share. In a recent episode of BBC’s The One Show, Isaacs revealed a truth that might shock fans: making the movies wasn’t as enjoyable as one might think.
"It’s a terrible confession to make: they weren’t that much fun to make," he admitted. The actor found the process of filming these special effects-heavy movies to be less than thrilling. “It’s quite boring making big special effects films; however, the pleasures all come afterward. I see and meet people for whom their lives were changed by it, and still people reading it and sharing it with their children. Some people say their lives were saved by it, and I believe it."
Despite his initial feelings, Isaacs is deeply moved by the impact of the films. He shared a heartfelt moment:
"Even though I was in the films, when I’ve taken godchildren or nephews and nieces to the [studio tour] and the thing comes up and suddenly you’re in the Great Hall," said Isaacs, who currently stars in season 3 of HBO’s The White Lotus. "Every time, I burst out in tears. It’s incredibly moving and overwhelming. There’s some magic that happened in those stories."
The Phenomenal Success of the Harry Potter Franchise

The franchise has spanned much more than just the original eight movies. Factastic Beast films, theme parks, clothes, jewelry, toys, games, and even an upcoming HBO TV series are a big part of it too. Isaacs, who was part of six of the eight Potter-focused movies, is well aware of this impact.
