Jakarta Launches Expanded Free Nutritious Meals Program
In a significant move to improve childhood nutrition in Jakarta, the National Nutrition Agency (BGN) plans to operate at least 557 special kitchens across the city. These kitchens will provide free nutritious meals to students as part of the Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG) program.
Building Partnerships for Healthy Meals
Collaborating with various stakeholders, the BGN aims to set up these kitchens, ensuring that every student receives balanced meals. During a recent visit to Park Public Elementary School (SDN) Cipulir 01 Pagi in South Jakarta, Speaker of the Jakarta Regional Representative Council (DPRD) Khoirudin highlighted the program’s progress and impact.
Program Success and Growth
Since January 2025, 14 SPPGs have been operational, successfully serving approximately 42,000 students in Jakarta. Khoirudin expressed his satisfaction with the program’s implementation, noting that students are participating well and bringing their own eating utensils whenever possible.
Fostering a Sense of Community
The initiative also promotes a sense of camaraderie among students. Those who forget their eating utensils are encouraged to wash their hands and join their classmates in enjoying the free meals. This communal dining experience enhances social interaction and school spirit.
Recent Developments in the SPPG Program
Hendra Hidayat, an official from the Jakarta Regional Secretariat, provided details on the specific targeting of the program. At SDN Cipulir 01 Pagi, for instance, the program serves 293 students. As of January 31, 126 schools across Jakarta have benefited from the 14 operational SPPGs.
Meal Contents and Future Updates
Students at SDN Cipulir 01 Pagi receive meal boxes containing a variety of nutrients such as rice, fried egg, long beans, stir-fried tempeh, and oranges. Plans are underway to include milk in the meal boxes twice a week, given its high calcium content and benefits for growing children.
National Reach of the Free Nutritious Meals Program
Initiated on January 6, 2025, the Free Nutritious Meals program has been rolled out across 26 provinces, including Jakarta. The program aims to improve overall nutritional intake by targeting schoolchildren, toddlers, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers.
