Deadly Israeli Airstrikes in Gaza: 54 Palestinians Killed as Conflict Enters 15th Month

The ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza has escalated once again, with recent airstrikes resulting in at least 54 Palestinian casualties. The devastating attacks mark another tragic milestone in a conflict that has persisted for 15 months, affecting primarily the civilian population.

Humanitarian Zone Struck

At least 11 Palestinians, including women and children, were killed in the Al-Mawasi district, a designated humanitarian zone meant to protect civilians. This area has seen frequent assaults by Israeli forces, challenging the notion of a safe haven.

According to the Hamas-run Gaza interior ministry, Director General of Gaza’s police department, Mahmoud Salah, and his aide, Hussam Shahwan, were among the casualties. Hamas issued a statement demanding accountability from Israel, accusing it of deliberately targeting civilians.

Israeli Military’s Response

The Israeli military justified its actions, stating it conducted an intelligence-based strike that targeted Hamas militants in the Al-Mawasi district. The military specifically mentioned the death of Hussam Shahwan, who they say was the head of Hamas security forces in southern Gaza. The statement did not address the death of Mahmoud Salah.

Other Casualties

Additional airstrikes killed at least 43 Palestinians in other areas. Six were reported dead at the Hamas interior ministry headquarters in Khan Younis, and others were injured in refugee camps such as Jabalia, Shati, and Maghazi.

The Israeli military claims it targeted “militants operating in a command and control centre embedded inside the Khan Younis municipality building in the Humanitarian Area.”

International Concerns

The head of UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence. “As the year begins, we got reports of yet another attack on Al-Mawasi with dozens of people killed, another reminder that there is no humanitarian zone, let alone a safe zone (in Gaza).” He emphasized that every day without a ceasefire brings more tragedy.

Israeli Military’s Stance

When questioned about the death toll, an Israeli military spokesperson maintained that the actions taken comply with international law. They stated that efforts were made to mitigate civilian harm, though they did not provide specifics on how such measures were implemented.

Continued Violence

In separate incidents, additional airstrikes in Gaza City resulted in four fatalities on Jala Street and two in Zeitoun. The conflict features recurring accusations between Israel and Hamas regarding the use of civilian infrastructure.

Hamas’ smaller ally, Islamic Jihad, engaged in rocket fire against the southern Israeli kibbutz of Holit. The Israeli military reported intercepting one rocket that had crossed from southern Gaza.

Conflict Statistics

According to Gaza’s health ministry, Israel has killed over 45,500 Palestinians since the beginning of the conflict. Major displacement and widespread destruction have affected the region’s 2.3 million inhabitants.

The war was sparked by Hamas’ cross-border attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. This initial attack resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people and the capture of 251 individuals by Hamas.

The Path Forward

The situation remains dire, with no immediate end to the hostilities in sight. Both sides continue to clash, with thousands of civilians caught in the crossfire. The international community has called for a ceasefire, emphasizing the need for a resolution that addresses the root causes of the conflict.

As the conflict enters its 15th month, the focus shifts to the human toll and the urgent need for intervention to prevent further loss of life and suffering.
