Indonesia’s Ombudsman’s office in Banten estimates that local fishermen suffered income losses of at least Rp 24 billion (US$1.4 million) due to unauthorized obstruction of their access to marine waters off the coast of Tangerang regency.
This financial impact is primarily attributed to a bamboo fence illegally erected 30 kilometers long across the waters of six districts in Tangerang. Over 4,000 local fisherfolk were affected,被迫 to purchase additional fuel for longer trips, reducing their catch significantly.
Impact on Local Economies
Fadli Afriadi, head of the Ombudsman Banten office, highlighted the severe economic damage to the fishermen during a press conference in Jakarta. He reported increased expenses due to extended travel times, which ultimately cut into their earnings.
“Moreover, the barrier has also caused substantial harm to the boats of the affected fishermen,” Afriadi stated.
Investigation into Illegal Activities
The Ombudsman conducted a thorough investigation from August last year to January of this year, prior to the Navy’s removal of the unauthorized fence on January 18th. During this period, the office uncovered evidence suggesting illegal practices related to the construction and documentation of the maritime barrier.
“There are strong indications that the installation of the sea fence was aimed at exerting control over the surrounding waters,” Afriadi elucidated.
Future Actions
The Ombudsman now calls upon relevant law enforcement authorities to delve deeper into the criminal aspects of the illegal construction project, including permit forgery.
“We urge law enforcement agencies to investigate potential crimes in the illegal installation of the bamboo sea fence,” Afriadi emphasized.
Conclusion
The unauthorized bamboo fence not only deprived local fishermen of their livelihoods but also violated maritime regulations, putting the legal rights of the community at risk. The ongoing investigation aims to uncover the true extent of the illegal activity and hold responsible parties accountable for their actions.
As unfair practices enrich a few at the cost of many, the role of vigilant law enforcement agencies is crucial in safeguarding the rights of Indonesia’s fishing communities and enforcing the rule of law.
