Indonesian Government Takes Proactive Steps to Combat Forest and Land Fires in 2025
Jakarta – The Indonesian government is taking early preparatory steps to prevent and reduce the risk of forest and land fires in 2025. Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurrofiq outlined these efforts in a recent statement following a coordination meeting held in Jakarta.
Briefing on ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution
Minister Nurrofiq said he briefed relevant ministries and agencies on the results of the 19th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution (AATHP), which was held in Bangkok, Thailand, last week. The minister emphasized the importance of enforcing the agreement to tackle haze pollution in the region.
Focused Collaboration and Meeting Coordination
The Ministry of Environment plans to organize a follow-up meeting with Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Budi Gunawan to synergize the government’s measures against forest and land fires. This collaboration will strengthen preparedness and response strategies across various agencies.
Minister’s Commitment to Minimize Risks
Minister Nurrofiq affirmed the government’s commitment to minimizing fire risk to the best extent possible. “We will make early preparations and assure all people of the government’s readiness to deal with the potential for forest and land fires in Indonesia,” he stated.
Key Stakeholders and Public Engagement
Nurrofiq highlighted the importance of collaboration among the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), National Police (Polri), regional governments, and the public in preventing and handling forest and land fires. These parties will work together to address the issue effectively.
Plenary Meeting for Preparatory Measures
The government plans to organize a plenary meeting in early January next year to coordinate preparatory measures against forest and land fires. The meeting will ensure officers in the field are well-prepared to handle any potential incidents.
Readiness Despite Normal Dry Season
“It remains critical for us to pursue a sound level of preparedness even though the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency has projected a normal duration of heat (dry season) in 2025,” Minister Nurrofiq emphasized. This level of preparedness is essential to prevent flare-ups.
Regional Commitment to Combating Transboundary Haze
During the AATHP regional meeting in Bangkok on December 18, Minister Nurrofiq reiterated Indonesia’s commitment to combating transboundary haze in Southeast Asia. The country has designated the newly established Ministry of Environment as the national coordinator for the AATHP.
