Indiana Governor Mike Braun Outlines Ambitious Plans in First State of the State Address
Just two weeks into his tenure, Indiana Governor Mike Braun has already set forth a string of policy initiatives designed to tackle key challenges facing the state. His first State of the State Address on Wednesday night outlined priorities ranging from property tax reduction to economic development, while also sparking controversy with measures aimed at dismantling diversity initiatives.
Braun addressed lawmakers and guests from the Statehouse in Indianapolis, painting a picture of a state poised for improvement. “Indiana does many things well, but the question we face is whether that will be a plateau or a foundation to build something truly exceptional?” he queried.
Cutting Taxes and Spending
Central to Braun’s agenda is the reduction of property taxes. He highlighted the case of the Parks couple from Greenfield, whose property tax bill more than doubled from $715 to $1,500 in just a few years. Their attendance underscored the impact of the issue on Hoosiers.
Proposed Senate Bill 1 aims to cap annual property tax increases at 3% for most properties, with exceptions for low-income and elderly homeowners or those with minor children. The bill also raises homestead deductions and mandates a transparency portal.
However, the proposal is not without opponents. Critics argue that it could shift more financial responsibility to local governments, straining their budgets for essential services like schools and public safety.
Public Safety and Economic Development
Braun’s address also touched on public safety, particularly illegal immigration. He criticized open borders, linking them to increased crime and dangerous drugs like fentanyl. His executive order mandates that all Indiana law enforcement cooperate fully with federal immigration efforts.

Regarding economic development, Braun called for a reorganization at the Indiana Economic Development Corporation and a focus on supporting homegrown businesses. He aimed to emulate his own entrepreneurial journey with his wife Maureen, who started businesses in their hometown of Jasper.
Health Care Costs and Education
Braun addressed rising health care costs, which he said disproportionately affect Hoosiers without improving health outcomes. His executive orders aim to tackle anti-competitive practices and surprise billing by requiring agencies to focus on price transparency, audits, and reviewing pharmacy middlemen’s roles.
Education reform was another key point. Braun endorsed expanding universal school choice, increasing teacher pay, and promoting workforce development programs. He cited success stories like 4T Academy in providing tangible opportunities for students by connecting them with jobs at local manufacturers.

Despite these efforts, Braun’s desire to dismantle diversity initiatives faced backlash. The Indiana Black Legislative Caucus held a “Unity Rally” outside the Statehouse, emphasizing their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Legislative Leaders React
Leaders from the Republican caucus largely backed Braun’s agenda, praising his focus on efficiency and taxpayer relief. House Speaker Todd Huston and Senate President Pro Tempore Rodric Bray both expressed support, highlighting Braun’s alignment with Republican priorities.
However, Democratic leaders like House Minority Leader Phil GiaQuinta and Senate Minority Leader Shelli Yoder were more critical. GiaQuinta described the property tax plan as a “farce” that places more financial burden on local governments, while Yoder criticized proposals for unfairly impacting tenants and draining public school funding.
Despite their differing views, both sides acknowledged the significance of being present for legislative sessions, underscoring the importance of bipartisan dialogue and collaboration.
