Bihar’s Sporting Renaissance: Hosting teh Khelo India Youth Games

Building on its recent successes in hosting major international sporting events, including the Women’s Asian Hockey Championship 2024, the World Cup Women’s Kabaddi, and the World Cup Sapak, Bihar is poised to elevate its sporting profile even further. The state is now preparing to host the 7th edition of the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG),a significant multi-sport event commencing on May 4,2025,in Patna. The opening ceremony will be graced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and other distinguished guests.

This event marks a pivotal moment for Bihar, positioning it as a central hub in India’s sporting narrative. With the inspiring slogan Khelega Bihar,Khilega Bihar (Bihar will play,Bihar will flourish),the state underscores its dedication to transforming the sports culture from the grassroots level to the international stage. The Khelo India youth Games will extend across five cities, making it the most geographically diverse edition since the event’s inception in 2018.

Unprecedented Participation and Diverse Sporting Disciplines

The 7th edition of the Khelo India Youth Games anticipates a massive turnout, with over 9,378 athletes, coaches, physiotherapists, and support staff representing 36 states and union territories. These participants will engage in fierce competition across 27 sports disciplines. Beyond mainstream events like athletics, boxing, and wrestling, the Games will also showcase traditional and indigenous sports such as Mallakhamb, Thang Ta, Kalaripayattu, gatka, and Yogasan, promoting India’s rich sporting heritage.

The inclusion of indigenous sports aligns with the Khelo India initiative’s goal of preserving and promoting India’s cultural heritage alongside athletic development.For example, Mallakhamb, a traditional Indian sport involving gymnastic feats on a vertical wooden pole or rope, has seen a resurgence in popularity thanks to the Khelo India program.

Geographic Reach: Spreading the Sporting Spirit Across Bihar

In a first for the KIYG, the games will be held in five major cities across Bihar: Patna, Rajgir (Nalanda), Gaya, Bhagalpur, and Begusarai. This widespread distribution signifies the most geographically comprehensive KIYG since its launch in 2018. This strategic decision aims to foster a deeper connection with local communities and promote sports participation throughout the state.

The complete list of sports includes: Athletics, Archery, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Cycling (Road and Track), Fencing, football, Gatka, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Kabaddi, Kalaripayattu, Kho-Kho, Mallakhambi, Rugby, Sepak Takraw, Shooting, Swimming, table Tennis, Tennis, Weightlifting, Wrestling, and Yoga.

Ensuring a Seamless Experience for Participants

The state government has implemented comprehensive measures to guarantee a smooth and positive experience for all participants. These arrangements encompass food,accommodation,transportation,and medical assistance. B Rajendra, Additional Chief secretary (Sports), has issued clear directives to ensure meticulous planning, including the creation of nutritious food menus, strict adherence to cleanliness standards, and the provision of adequate transportation for all athletes and staff.

Centralized Support and a Vision for the Future
