India’s bid to advance in the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships 2025 came to an end on Friday when they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Japan at the Conson Gymnasium in Qingdao, People’s Republic of China. Despite a valiant effort, the Indian team, which included stars like Malvika Bansod and Dhruv Kapila, couldn’t overcome the formidable Japanese squad.
Mixed Doubles Showdown
The mixed doubles match kicked off the day’s competition with India’s Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto taking on Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito from Japan. Ranked 37th in the world, the Indian pair put up a spirited fight but ultimately fell short, losing 21-13, 17-21, 21-13 after a closely contested 61 minutes of play.
Women’s Singles: Strong Opposition
In the women’s singles event, world No. 31 Malvika Bansod faced Japan’s Tomoka Miyazaki, ranked 8th globally. Despite battling back in the second game, Bansod couldn’t secure the victory, losing 21-12, 21-19.
Men’s Singles: Final Chance
The pressure was on India’s 32-year-old HS Prannoy, ranked 31st, to keep the team’s hopes alive in the men’s singles. A strong presence on the international circuit, Prannoy came back from a loss in the first game but couldn’t seal the deal. Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto, ranked 16th, won the tie with a score of 21-15, 15-21, 21-12, cementing Japan’s place in the semi-finals.
India’s Quest for Improvement
India had earlier secured a spot in the quarter-finals by finishing as runners-up in Group D behind South Korea. Macau China, facing tough competition, found themselves eliminated in the group stage after scoring zero points.
