In memory of the scientific advisor Andrey Verbitsky – Society

On December 22, 2020, Andrey Aleksandrovich Verbitsky, Russian psychologist and teacher, academician of the Russian Academy of Education, Doctor of Pedagogy, Candidate of Psychology, Professor of the specialty “Pedagogical and Developmental Psychology”, Professor of the Department of Labor Psychology and Psychological Consulting of the Institute of Pedagogy and Psychology Moscow State Pedagogical University.

Verbitsky A.A. participated in research projects of the Ministry of Education of Russia “Higher School of Russia”, “Innovative pedagogical technologies”, in the development of state concepts of continuing education and continuous postgraduate education. He is the author of over 200 scientific and scientific-methodical works, 5 monographs. Awarded with the K.D. Ushinsky and the Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Education, the badge “Honorary Worker of Higher Professional Education”.

In 2018, he was awarded the honorary title of “Professor of the Year” in the nomination “Pedagogical Science” by the Russian professors’ meeting.

For the teaching staff of MBOU “Secondary School No. 33” in the city of Smolensk, the untimely departure of Andrei Alexandrovich Verbitsky is an irreparable loss. He was the scientific director of the innovative scientific and educational platform of the Moscow State Pedagogical University, opened on the basis of our school on the problem “School – Center for Social and Contextual Education” for the period 2018-2021.

But he was not just a scientific director of the site, he was a great friend and ideological inspirer of our teaching staff, repeatedly visited our school, met with the administration, teachers of the school, held original seminars, presented advanced innovative ideas, original developments, shared his thoughts on the prospects for the development of education …

It is well known that Academician of RAO Verbitsky A.A. is the author of the psychological and pedagogical theory of contextual education.

Although the theory of contextual learning was originally formulated for the purposes of vocational education, according to the author, its methodology can be developed in relation to general education, relying on competence-based and contextual approaches. It was this idea that formed the basis of the Concept of an innovative platform based on our school under the scientific supervision of A.A. Verbitsky, since certain prerequisites were created at the school.

For five years (from 2013 to 2017), the school functioned in the status of a regional innovation platform (RIP) on the problem “Management of the development of a social-contextual educational environment in a modern mass school.” The main system-forming effect of the implementation of the RIP program was the creation of a cluster three-level model of the socio-contextual educational environment in the conditions of MBOU “Secondary School No. 33”, which determined the novelty of innovative experience. The innovative activity of the teaching staff ensured the achievement of qualitatively new educational results – the formation of social and contextual competencies in students.

In this regard, the existing experience and scientific vision of the possibility of using the technology of contextual education had already been formed, it was necessary to present the existing developments and obtain a scientific assessment of the possibility of transferring technology from one level of education (professional) to another (level of general education).

It was at this time, in July 2017, that the first meeting of the school director S.A. Zhoykin took place. and Deputy Director for Scientific and Methodological Work L.A. Kurishkina. with the scientist in the framework of the author’s master classes by A.A. Verbitsky in the city of Smolensk.

This meeting became truly significant for our team: Andrei Alexandrovich was interested in the results of the school’s activities and the systemic effects of innovative work, and he invited the school administration to apply for the status of an innovative research and educational platform at Moscow State Pedagogical University, the scientific director of which he was appointed in September 2018 …

Key idea, which formed the basis for the design of the model “School – Center for Social and Contextual Education”, were the psychological and pedagogical theory and principles of contextual education by A.A. Verbitsky based on the integration of the system, competence-context and resource-context approaches.

Context – the basic concept of A.A. Verbitsky. In contextual education, with the help of a system of educational problems, problem situations, tasks, practices, a plot outline of the assimilated activity is built, turning the static content of education into a dynamically deployable one. The main unit of the content of contextual education is a situation of a supra-subject or metasubject nature, although there is enough space for the usual educational tasks and tasks. Mastering the norms of competent subject, supra-subject and metasubject actions and relationships of people in the course of individual and joint analysis and resolution of given situations, the student develops both as a person with a certain competence and as a member of society.

At joint business meetings with Andrei Alexandrovich, organized at our school, we shared with the scientist our experience of adapting the theory of contextual education in the context of a general education mass school, analyzed the present, and made common plans for the future.

We are grateful to our supervisor A.A. Verbitsky. for the correct analysis of our materials, deep understanding of the possible adaptation and expansion of the didactic-methodological boundaries of educational technology of contextual education, for a new view of the possibility of its use in order to form the functional literacy of students.

Andrei Aleksandrovich was distinguished by the depth of information analysis, thoughtful perception of what was happening, accurate critical remarks in the form of correct questions and clarifications, literacy in conducting scientific discussions, as well as an amazing ability to dilute the academic language of science with an inimitable sense of humor, surprise his listeners with a parable told in time or a beautifully performed musical miniature.

At business meetings, extended scientific and methodological councils were repeatedly held, allowing to summarize some intermediate results of the work on the implementation of contextual education technology, clarify the conceptual apparatus of research in connection with the development of the concept of “social contextual education”, discuss the possibilities of presenting developments at the all-Russian level.

Andrey Alexandrovich highly appreciated the level of elaboration and solution of the problem of using the theory of contextual education in our school, saw the prospects for its development and further transformation. During our joint work with Andrei Aleksandrovich Verbitsky, we have revealed the pedagogical foundations and principles of social-contextual education in secondary school – one of the promising directions for the implementation of the theory and practice of contextual education, which correlates with the directions of implementation of the FSES of general education.

As a result of the joint analysis of the available approaches, developments and the presented experience, the scientific leader A.A. and the school director Zhoykin S.A. it was concluded that the psychological and pedagogical theory of contextual education is adequate to the goals of the implementation of the main directions of the development of general education schools and the requirements of the Federal State Educational Standard of General Education, as well as the key tasks of the Modern School project of the Education national project.

An important result of the joint activities of the teaching staff of MBOU “Secondary School No. 33” and scientific advisor A. Verbitsky was the publication of the article “Conceptual model of school as a Center for social and contextual education” in the journal “Pedagogy” (No. 3, 2020), in which the presented model received a scientific-theoretical and practice-oriented justification. And this means that the ideas of the scientist, teacher and thinker Andrei Alexandrovich Verbitsky will continue to be realized on the Smolensk land in the school, whose friend he was …

A meeting between a scientist and teachers … How important it is for a teacher to be heard, to communicate with people of science, to understand the relevance of transformations in the Russian education system in general and, in particular, in his native school, to understand innovation and the need for his own professional development – all this happened during time of meetings with Andrey Aleksandrovich Verbitsky.

The teacher also changes the professional environment, especially if it is of a dialogical type, in which the teacher feels himself to be a subject of innovative transformations, and not a powerless object of monological control by the school administration. Meetings with a scientist arouse the interest of each teacher, changing opinions, developing a position, designing plans and changes.

This influence cannot be replaced …

But he left. Noble, honest, unshakable in his faith in education, loving people, always directed to the future with his thoughts … But there is still a bright memory of him, our meetings, plans, prospects in work …

In a congratulatory letter to the school staff on October 05, 2020, our supervisor wrote:

The bright memory of Andrei Alexandrovich Verbitsky will be kept in our hearts. He left, leaving us his scientific legacy. It is a pity that now it is impossible to consult with him, ask a question, write a letter, just meet.

But he remained our scientific advisor – we will read his books, monographs, articles and find in them what this wonderful person, a great scientist could tell us, giving it a new meaning and acquiring new knowledge.
