◆ What is “Seragaki Island / Clark’s Anemone Development Project”?
This project is supported by Okinawa Prefecture’s “Okinawa Tourism Content Development Support Project” with the aim of creating a sustainable tourism system while nurturing and preserving bear flies around Seragaki Island. To promote. Clark’s anemone breeding is carefully carried out under the supervision of Professor Timothy Rabashi, who studies ocean climate change at OIST.
From June 2021, at OIST’s coastal research facility “OIST Marine Science Station”, the hatching and breeding of anemone anemones began in the aquarium of the facility with the cooperation of the Marine Climate Change Unit. After that, from the end of October to November 2021, we plan to release the grown anemone fry to the anemone breeding area around Seragaki Island and follow up for restoration to the ocean. The anemone breeding area is set after investigating the growth of wild anemones and the marine environment.
This project will be carried out with the utmost care so as not to disturb the natural ecosystem. Before the release of anemone anemone, the DNA of wild anemone in the surrounding waters, the parent fish anemone anemone used for breeding, and the fry of anemone anemone released will be collected, and OIST will perform population genetic analysis. The purpose of this analysis is to understand the kinship of clark’s anemones in the surrounding waters and breeding areas. Since the breeding area is close to our hotel, it is easier to follow up than in the general sea area. The progress of this project will be announced on the hotel website at any time.
◆ Started a program to learn “Let’s protect the richness of the sea” through snorkeling and diving experience at the hotel
From November 2021, after confirming the good growth status of the released anemone, in addition to the snorkeling and diving experience around the breeding area, the background of the conservation and breeding of anemone, the research content of OIST, and one of the goals of SDGs. We are planning to start a program that combines a lecture to learn “Let’s protect the richness of the sea”. Through this program, we aim to contribute to sustainable tourism by deepening participants’ understanding of environmental conservation and returning a part of the program’s sales to future anemone breeding.
