In order to find the right amount of rice, it is not only your appetite that is decisive, but also whether the rice should be served as a side dish or as a main course. Does it come with meat, vegetables or a filling sauce? We have an overview for you:

Rice is versatile and can therefore easily be used as a main course. As a rule, 100 to 120 grams of dry rice per person is expected.

If the rice is a side dish, expect 60 grams of dry rice per person.

Risotto is usually served as a main course because it is very filling. It is also delicious – which is why the eyes are sometimes larger than the stomach when cooking. 100 grams of uncooked risotto rice is usually enough for one person. If the risotto contains a lot of vegetables or other ingredients, you can of course reduce the amount of rice.

Maki, Nigiri, California Roll: Homemade sushi is a very special treat. How much sushi rice you need depends on how thick you fill the rolls. For a sushi roll you need about 50 to 75 grams of sushi rice. You can cut around 6 to 8 makis from a roll.

If you want to eat sushi as a main course, you can expect around 150 grams of sushi rice per person. This gives you 2-3 maki rolls and up to 6 nigiris, i.e. up to 30 canapés.

Rice pudding is often served as a dessert – but because it is so filling, many also like it as a main course.

As a main course, you can include 100 grams of uncooked rice pudding per serving.

If you want to serve the rice pudding as dessert or, for example, serve a lot of fruit with it, you will get by with around 50 grams of rice pudding per person.

In recipes, the amount of rice is often given in cups. But how much is that actually? After all, everyone has cups of different sizes in their closets – everything from espresso cups to coffee mugs is included. One cup of rice (uncooked) corresponds to about 120 grams.

Another difficulty in cooking rice: finding the right amount of water. The amount required depends on the type of rice and of course the amount of rice. With basmati rice, for example, you should use 1.5 times the amount of water. So if you want to cook 100 grams of rice, use 150 grams of water.
