Police: “Don’t leave luggage in the car, use a zipper bag”

The Toronto Police Service has warned citizens to be cautious, saying that incidents of pickpocketing and car theft are on the rise in the downtown core as the end of the year approaches. Police said the suspects were targeting people and vehicles visiting shopping malls and various holiday events.

Toronto police said that pickpocketing and vehicle theft are increasing rapidly in downtown at the end of the year, and urged people to strictly follow basic preventive rules, such as not leaving valuables unattended, using zippered bags, and keeping them in car trunks. CP Communications
The police explained that pickpocketing incidents and theft of items from vehicles have been on the rise recently in the downtown area, and most cases occur when victims are distracted or leave items unattended for a while. Thieves focus on shopping bags, valuables, and packages visible inside vehicles.
Police strongly advise people not to leave cell phones, wallets or shopping bags in their vehicles when shopping or attending events. He also emphasized that belongings “must be kept within sight and maintained at all times.”
To prevent pickpocketing, police recommend using zippered bags, crossbody straps, and internal pockets, and are especially careful not to put wallets and cell phones in the back pockets of pants.
The police advised, “Do not leave shopping bags or packages where they can be seen, even for a moment.” If you use a car, you must store items in the trunk before arriving at your destination and make sure all doors and windows of the vehicle are locked.
The police explained that as opportunities for crime increase during the holiday season, a lot of damage can be prevented with just basic storage habits.
