GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Today, people in Pitt County have a greater understanding of how to live with dementia.
A virtual reality tour gave people a taste of the physical and mental challenges of those with dementia face.
"The goal is for assistants to see what it feels like to live with dementia, so that people living with dementia can get better care," nurse Rubi Merino said.
People wore headphones, gloves, glasses and inserts placed in their shoes to alter their senses to reflect what a person with dementia would experience.
Many people who participated in the tour said they were close to someone with dementia.
They said this tour gave them a better understanding and empathy for their beloved.,
"It's a very difficult number," said Greenville resident Dede Carny. "The slightest little thing or small task becomes almost impossible sometimes due to physical changes in your body or ongoing external distractions and how this affects what you are trying to do or simply order your day."
The idea is to give caregivers an idea of the feeling of someone with dementia.
