New Delhi: Exercise plays a very important role in determining your overall health and well-being. It helps you maintain a healthy weight and avoid the risk of disease. Studies have linked regular exercise with a healthy heart and also the reduced risk of diabetes.
However, a recent study has shown that a protein can replace exercise and have the same effects on the body. The protein called Sestrin is a natural protein and can produce the positive effects of exercise, even in its absence. The research was conducted by Michigan Medicine academics and can help people live a healthy life, especially those in their old age.
Researchers had previously noticed that protein builds up in muscles after an exercise. As the researchers tried to explore the link further, they developed a fly treadmill. Using the treadmill, they trained the flies for three weeks and compared their ability to run and fly with normal flies that lacked the ability to make Sestrin. Flies can usually run for four to six hours, and the capacity of normal flies improved during that period, however, flies without Sestrin did not improve with exercise.
When additional sestrin was induced in the muscles of normal flies, maximizing their sestrin levels, it was discovered that those flies had superior abilities and beyond trained flies, even without exercise.
Sestrin also has other positive impacts on the body. Improving aerobic capacity, improved breathing and fat burning are usually associated with exercise. The researchers suggested that Sestrin can coordinate these biological activities by activating or deactivating the different metabolic pathways.
