In recent years, a significant increase in cancer has been registered in Germany. According to health experts, a large proportion of cancer cases are due to an unhealthy lifestyle with insufficient exercise and an incorrect diet. Certain foods increase the risk of cancer, especially greatly.

Number of cancer diagnoses doubled in Germany

According to experts, around 14 million people worldwide get cancer each year and about 8.8 million people die from it. Also in Germany there are more and more new cases of cancer. The number of new diagnoses has almost doubled since 1970 in this country. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), every second German citizen sooner or later falls ill. This is partly due to the widespread lack of exercise and unhealthy food.

A large part of the disease can be prevented

There are many causes of cancer: familial predisposition, pre-existing conditions or randomly mutated cells can play a role.

But there are also a number of avoidable factors. Last year British scientists published a study that showed that about four out of ten cancer cases could have been prevented if the patients had maintained a healthier lifestyle.

Experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) come to similar conclusions: they estimate that about a third of cancers are due to insufficient exercise and unhealthy diet.

To reduce the risk of personal cancer, it makes sense to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Especially important here are regular exercise, avoiding being overweight, remembering nicotine and a healthy diet.

Institutions such as the WHO International Cancer Research Agency (IARC) or the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) classify cancer risk & # 39; s. They rely on many years of studies.

The Stiftung Warentest has examined the current state of affairs and provides an overview of "test.de" on foods that are thought to increase the risk of cancer.

Reduce meat and sausage consumption

Processed meat such as smoked sausage is classified by the WHO as "carcinogenic". Consumption, among other things, increases the risk of colorectal cancer.

Certain bacon and ham varieties and red meat can cause cancer, as studies have shown.

Stiftung Warentest recommends as many sausages as possible and a maximum of 500 grams of red meat per week.

Milk and sugar

Milk can also be problematic. According to the Nutrition Report 2012 of the German Food Company (DGE), calcium from milk and dairy products in very high quantities in men can increase the risk of prostate cancer.

In "test.de" it is therefore noted that men should not constantly take more than 1.5 grams of calcium per day. That is the amount contained in approximately 1.25 liters of milk or 140 grams of hard cheese.

Little milk is of course recommended. According to the report, 0.2 to 0.8 liters per day can protect against colon cancer and women can protect against breast cancer.

Although sugar is not a direct but indirect risk, it can lead to overweight if it is consumed too much.

According to health experts, being overweight increases the risk of at least 13 cancers. According to the product test, the risk of illness increases with a body-measure index of more than 25.

The experts recommend that you only eat sweets at special times and drink water instead of lemonade. In addition, the BMI must be kept in mind.

The BMI can be calculated by dividing the body weight in kilograms by the square of the height in meters. With a BMI between 25 and 30, a person is considered overweight and more than 30 as obese (obese).

Live abstinence

Alcohol also influences the risk of cancer.

According to a study, he may prefer at least seven different cancers – in the mouth and throat, the esophagus and the breast, as well as in the intestine and liver.

The risk can only be eliminated by abstinence. The more alcoholic beverages are consumed, the more harmful. It doesn't matter if it is champagne, beer, wine or schnapps.

The so-called binge drinking is particularly critical. In addition, the risk of cancer is increased by additional smoking, because alcohol makes the oral mucosa permeable to tobacco pollutants, explains the Stiftung Warentest.

However, those who do not want to abstain completely from alcohol should follow the advice of scientists: according to this women should drink a maximum of one drink (0.1 liters of wine or 0.3 liters of beer) per day. And men should not approve more than two such drinks a day.

Recommended foods

However, there are not only foods that increase the risk of cancer, but also foods that reduce the risk.

For example, a scientific study has shown that organic food reduces the risk of cancer.

It is also generally recommended to include a large amount of fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains in the diet. Because they provide important fibers and phytochemicals that stimulate digestion and strengthen the immune system.

"It is estimated that the risk of cancer in people, who mainly eat food of plant origin, decreases by 11 percent," says the WHO. (Ad)
