Several cases of mumps were confirmed at the ICE in Texas, health officials say

Saturday's health officials confirmed seven cases of mumps at a US immigration and customs office (ICE) in Houston.

The Houston Department of Health stated in a press release that the cases concerned seven adults who had been detained during their infectious period – which means there was no evidence that anyone outside the facility was infected.

"Since these individuals were isolated within the structure during the time they were infected, we do not expect these cases to be a threat to the community," said Dr. David Persse, the health authority. local Houston and the medical director EMS.

Health officials are working with the ICE facility to monitor the transmission of the disease and provide on-site treatment.

The Houston Department of Health describes mumps as "a contagious disease that can be prevented by a vaccine caused by a virus".

Outbreaks of infectious diseases have been very recently in the news. For example, a recent outbreak of measles in the north-west has reignited the debate on infant vaccinations.

At least 44 people in Washington and Oregon have fallen ill in the last weeks with the extraordinarily contagious virus, which was uprooted in the United States in 2000 as a result of immunization, but arrives periodically with foreign travelers.

Officials say that 37 of the confirmed cases were people who were not immunized and that most cases were children under 10 years
