Pancreatic cancer: a promising vaccine avenue

This is a new step in the treatment of certain cancers using a vaccine approach. ELI-002 2P, a product developed by the American firm Elicio Therapeutics, helps boost the immune system to train it to identify mutations in the KRAS gene, particularly common in pancreatic cancer – a tumor with an often poor prognosis.
The first clinical trials were carried out by a team bringing together researchers from several American universities and published in the journal Nature Medicine on January 9. This preliminary stage, called “phase 1”, essentially serves to verify that the vaccine is safe. “We found that it was safe, well tolerated, and we even saw promising signs that suggest it could be effective”cautiously suggests Shubham Pant, professor in the department of gastrointestinal oncology at the University of Texas and principal investigator of this study.
In total, this included twenty-five patients with tumors (twenty of pancreatic origin and five colorectal) presenting a KRAS mutation, previously treated by surgery and chemotherapy. All had high risks of relapse, with the presence of circulating tumor DNA or cancer biomarkers in the blood.
