Norovirus outbreak confirmed at Santa Maria hospital – Island Echo


The norovirus is currently affecting patients in a ward of St Mary’s Hospital, confirmed the NHS Trust of the Isle of Wight.

There are currently a small number of cases in one of the hospital rooms, which has not been named.

Norovirus, also called winter vomiting virus, is a stomach virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea. It can be very unpleasant, but it usually disappears in about 2 days.

Islanders who have recently experienced illnesses are asked not to visit patients in the hospital.

Check if you have norovirus

The main symptoms of norovirus are:

  • feeling sick (nausea)
  • Diarrhea
  • being sick (vomiting)

You can also have:

  • a high temperature of 38C or more
  • A headache
  • arm and leg pain

Symptoms begin suddenly within 1 to 2 days of being infected.
