Partly until an afternoon nap? The same and we have news for you. According to new scientific research, a snooze during the day is actually good for our health. Hallelujah.
After analyzing data from 212 people, Greek scientists concluded that a regular afternoon nap is an effective way to lower blood pressure. Given that hypertension – or high blood pressure – can put you at risk for all kinds of health conditions such as heart disease and strokes, that's a good reason for sleeping.
The study was conducted by doctors at Asklepieion General Hospital in Voula, Greece, and involved testing participants with high blood pressure. They all wore a blood pressure monitor and those who slept for one hour a day experienced an average 3 mm Hg drop in blood pressure compared to those who did not.
According to the study co-author, Dr. Manolis Kallistratos, "sleep in the afternoon seems to lower blood pressure to the same extent as other lifestyle changes, for example salt and alcohol reduction can lower blood pressure by 3 to 5 mm Hg.
Based on our findings, if someone has the luxury of taking a nap during the day, this can also have benefits for high blood pressure. "
