LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – (10/10/19) Roy Hauuger, was just after 6am on Tuesday, sitting alone in his vehicle at Sugar Mill Road in the Iberia peninsula, more than 32 kilometers from his home in Lafayette.
Courtney Marks says he was on the morning trajectory of the card when he noticed Hauuger in his vehicle, in the middle of the roadway, and says he passed it and then backed off because "something was not right".
Marks said that Hauuger got out of his car and greeted her.
"I rolled down the window and spoke very loudly, he looked scared and told me he had run out of gas and left home Monday night to visit his wife in the nursing home and got lost".
Marks says he immediately felt sorry for Hauuger and got out of his car to help.
"I felt sad for him, I could say he was honest and I could also see that he was tired, hungry and sleepy because he kept repeating that his wife was in the nursing home and had to go see her".
Marks says he called 911 that sent the police and EMT to check it.
Then he says he asked if he could take a picture and publish it on his social media page to ask for help from anyone who might have information about his family.
"He understood when I said Facebook and started smiling and told me he had a daughter," Marks recalls with a chuckle.
The post, which was shared more than 7,000 times, attracted the attention of Shontrona Batiste of Lafayette, an employee of the nursing home where Hauuger's wife was a resident.
"I saw the post and recognized the man, then I got permission from my supervisor to contact the family to make them aware of what had just happened." Batiste said.
She believes her faith in God and the willingness to do the right thing that stopped her on her way to help bring the family together.
"I never check social media in the morning when I leave work," said Batiste, "but today I felt I needed it too, as if God wanted me to see something."
Hauuger returned to Lafayette mid-morning Tuesday and in the arms of his wife and daughter.
"On the way we stopped at McDonalds and ordered a big breakfast, and he ate most of it and then fell asleep." Marks said.
"This brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it, but as I was driving once he woke up and looked at me and said thank you my angel, God sent you to me, you are my guardian angel."
Marks says he then went back to sleep.
"I was put on this earth to do good things and to help people and to treat people the way I would like to be treated." Marks said.
"Today was a good day."
