Treating fine lines and wrinkles does not necessarily require a trip to the dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon. Regular use of anti-aging products, such as night creams or eye creams, can make a real difference in how your skin looks and feels, and there are many excellent ones that do not require a prescription (or cost a fortune).
"There are two categories of products: those who treat and prevent wrinkles, and others who minimize their appearance," says Pennsylvania-based board-certified dermatologist Erum Ilyas, MD.
The first category of products contains legitimate anti-aging ingredients (such as retinol), while the second contains ingredients that overly hydrate the skin or temporarily swell the skin to make wrinkles less noticeable – but once you stop it, your skin goes back to are regularly scheduled programming.
That does not mean that you have to avoid the last category. "These products aim to give faster results, which is perfect if you just want something that will make you look better for an event," says Dr. Ilyas.
In short: know what you want from your anti-aging creams before your wallet breaks down. If you are busy for a long time and are looking for a wrinkle cream that you can keep up with, there are several qualities you have to pay attention to when you shop.
How to choose the best anti-aging face cream
Scan the label: The dermatologists with whom we spoke, recommended products containing the following ingredients:
- retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) promote cell renewal, stimulate the production of collagen and help to equalize the complexion.
- peptides are another important anti-aging staple that helps to repair skin damage.
- antioxidants such as vitamins C and E help fight free radicals (unstable molecules that can cause great damage to your cells).
- Hyaluronic acid, ceramides, Shea butter and other hydrators can strengthen and block moisture, reducing the irritant effects of anti-aging ingredients.
Know your skin type: "For those who have oily skin or live in humid climates, a lightweight cream with mattifying properties will prevent the skin from becoming heavier and shinier," says Joel Schlessinger, MD, Omaha-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon. "On the other hand, if someone has dried out skin or lives in a dry, cold area, a rich cream is more suitable for their regimen."
Factor in sensitivities: If your skin is easily irritated, consider looking for anti-aging creams that contain bakuchiol instead of retinol. "It actually has the same effect as retinol at the local level, but it is less irritating, because it is also an anti-inflammatory agent," says Dr. Ilyas. Other possible irritants include fragrances, salicylic acid, artificial colors and even coconut oil or cocoa butter, which can clog pores and cause pimples.
Search for prime packaging: Ingredients such as vitamin C, retinol and peptides can become unstable and deteriorate when exposed to air or light, so all products containing them must be packaged in dark, opaque tubes, preferably with airtight pumps, says Lela Lankerani, DO, board – Certified dermatologist at Westlake Dermatology in Austin, Texas.
But even with all this information in mind, it can be overwhelming of all anti-aging creams to find the one that suits you best. Which experts recommend the most? Read on to find out.

Neutrogena & r's Rapid Wrinkle Repair Night Moisturizer is a milder retinol product that helps bring new skin cells to the surface while stimulating new collagen growth, according to the certified dermatologist Tsippora Shainhouse, MD. Best of all, it is suitable for all skin types.

"It has the necessary retinol to treat and prevent wrinkles, along with effective moisturizing ingredients to minimize the irritation that most people will experience with retinol-containing products," she says. It is also oil-free and non-comedogenic, so you do not have to worry about causing pimples. The fact that it is affordable is a icing on the cake.

"The ingredients in this moisturizer can achieve results from a number of much more expensive products," says Dr. Jaliman. It contains ceramides and hyaluronic acid, making it an excellent moisturizer that helps to reduce the crepe appearance of the skin, while niacinamide helps to equalize the complexion. It is a light formulation that does not clog the pores (and is super simple in the wallet).
How to get the most out of your anti-aging creams
Low in the right order: You want your products to complement each other, do not work against each other. "Remember to apply anti-aging creams unless otherwise indicated after all other skin care – except your daily sunscreen, "Dr. Schlessinger says, for example, applying a cream to a gel or serum may prevent them from penetrating well into the skin.
Make sure the ingredients get along with each other: Many of us market products because we think these are the active ingredients that will help raise our skin, while in reality we might deactivate them by combining ingredients that clash and retinoids are a good example of.
"Retinoids are some of the most proven topical options for anti-aging, but they are often inactivated by alpha hydroxyacids and benzoyl peroxide," says Dr. King. "So if you put products together and one contains AHA and one contains a retinoid, then you will not benefit from the retinoid at all." (They are also affected by exposure to the sun, which is why they are usually found in night creams.)
exfoliate: Fattyness and dead skin cells can clog the pores and disrupt the penetration of the product, Dr. says. Schlessinger, who recommends using an exfoliator once a week to ensure that you have all the benefits of your anti-aging creams.
Keep your products in the right way: "The efficacy of anti-aging products is compromised if you do not store your products in the right place," says Dr. Lankerani. Products with active ingredients such as retinol and vitamin C should be stored in a dark, cool environment to slow down the breakdown of the active ingredients.
Be patient: "Although the amount of time needed to see visible results varies from product to product, I recommend waiting 12 weeks to see results with most anti-aging creams," Dr. Schlessinger.
