Fishing Boat Capsizes off Halifax, Claiming Two Lives

In a devastating marine tragedy, two crew members have perished after their fishing boat capsized off the coast of Halifax late Thursday. The incident occurred amid tumultuous weather with waves reaching four meters and sustained strong winds.

Rescue Operations Then and Now

Despite the harsh conditions, a relentless rescue effort was initiated by the Canadian Coast Guard. Two other crew members who were pulled from the frigid waters—approximately two degrees Celsius—were successfully treated in hospitals and later released.

Vessel Details and Ownership

Jose Teixeira, owner of the Fortune Pride, confirmed to CBC News that Captain John Allen Baker was among the deceased. The vessel’s deckhand was also reported missing and never found, marking the second fatality.

Three crew members were initially rescued on Thursday night, and the fourth survivor was plucked from the water at 11:30 a.m. on Friday. According to Kelsey Marshall of the Canadian Coast Guard, conditions were exceptionally challenging, with waves towering over four meters, creating perilous conditions for those aboard the Fortune Pride.

Relaying Messages in Crises

Remarkably, the vessel did not manage to transmit a distress signal. Instead, the emergency beacon was the first indication of the crisis, leading rescue teams to the last-known location of the Fortune Pride.

Rescue operations deployed two Coast Guard vessels, the CCGS Hare Bay and the CCGS Sir William Alexander, complemented by a Cormorant helicopter and a Hercules fixed-wing aircraft. “It was not a good day to be out on the water, for sure,” Marshall emphasized.

Aftermath and Investigation

Upon arrival, rescuers did not locate the capsized fishing vessel itself, relying instead on the emergency beacon to guide them. The first three crew members rescued were unable to provide coherent accounts of the incident due to the trauma sustained in the capsizing and subsequent immersion in cold waters.

All three survivors were wearing survival suits, which likely played a crucial role in their survival. Tragically, the fourth victim found Friday morning was found in an overturned life raft and was unresponsive, having spent extended periods without protective gear.

Following the incident, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) dispatched a team of investigators to scrutinize the cause of the capsizing and recommend measures to prevent similar events in the future.

Lessons Learned for Future Safety

The incident underscores the harsh realities of working at sea and the vital importance of preparedness. Survival suits, flares, and regular drills for emergency situations can make all the difference in a life-threatening situation.

As rescue teams commend the survivors’ resilience, discussions continue about maritime safety to safeguard the lives of crew members working in treacherous marine environments.
