Gyanesh Kumar’s name was proposed by a committee headed by PM Narendra Modi, home minister Amit Shah, and leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.

This appointment is significant as Kumar is the first CEC to be chosen under the new law governing the election commissioner selection process. Additionally, Dr. Vivek Joshi, an IAS officer from the 1989 batch, has been appointed as an election commissioner, with his term starting from the same date.

The selection committee, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Rahul Gandhi, leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, finalized Kumar’s appointment. The committee met at the Prime Minister’s Office in South Block and recommended his name after considering candidates shortlisted by a search panel.

Who Is Gyanesh Kumar?

Gyanesh Kumar, born in Kerala, is a decorated Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1988 batch. His career has been marked by significant roles in various government ministries.

Kumar’s recent stint includes serving as Secretary at the Ministry of Cooperation, an office he held until his retirement in January 2024.
