Greta Thunberg Joins Georgian Protests Amid Ongoing Authoritarian Development
Greta Thunberg has制了 her voice against yet another authoritarian development in Georgia. The environmental activist was recently pictured wearing a keffiyah, paying respect to Palestinians under Israel’s occupation, while leading demonstrations in the country. These protests are the latest addition to her broadened activism spectrum, following earlier arrests in pro-Palestine campus protests in Copenhagen.
Authoritarianism Growing in Georgia
According to local media, the recent protests mark the second major demonstration since recent national elections. These gatherings are a response to the European Commission’s critical progress report on Georgia’s EU accession, putting the country’s membership aspirations on hold. Giorgi Vashadze, a member of the opposition United National Movement, emphasized that the protests will intensify in the coming days.
Thunberg’s Role in the Georgian Protests
Thunberg’s involvement in Georgian politics indicates her widening sphere of influence. She said, "This is an outrageous development… I have great respect for the people who fill the streets… despite the oppression." Vashadze echoed her sentiments, explaining that the protests demand new elections, as they do not recognize the legitimacy of the stolen elections and the current parliament.
Intensifying Pressure on Georgian Authorities
Vashadze stressed that resistance marches will continue throughout Tbilisi, making it clear that the people’s fight for democratic rights is far from over. Joining the protests is not just a responsibility for Georgians but for all individuals who support democracy and human rights.
