Archduke Johann Bridge Closure Impacts CityPEACH and Traffic Flow
The highly anticipated opening of CityPEACH in downtown Graz has been postponed indefinitely due too the extensive renovation of the Archduke Johann-Bridge. Scheduled to commence in July, the project will focus on upgrading road crossings and replacing the “track extraction device” on this vital artery connecting Murgasse and Kunsthaus. While one side of the bridge will remain operational to maintain some traffic flow, meaningful delays are expected.
Tram Network Overhaul: Short-Term Pain for Long-Term Gain
Graz residents are bracing for a summer of significant disruptions to public transportation as the city undertakes crucial upgrades to its tram network. The Holding Graz acknowledges the inconvenience, with board member Mark Perz describing the situation as possibly “tedious,” urging passengers to exercise patience. These disruptions are deemed necessary to facilitate the expansion of the Graz tram route, slated to open in November 2025.This new line will run via Neutor- and Belgiergasse, aiming to alleviate congestion on Herrengasse.
The project involves connecting the new rails to Annenstrasse, and the construction window will be used to perform othre essential maintenance work concurrently, minimizing future disruptions. Though, this means a three-month suspension of tram services to the west of Graz.
“Actually, it is indeed the Supergau and it will also be really tedious. We can only ask all passengers for patience,”
Mark Perz, Holding Graz Board Member
Mitigation Strategies: Replacement Traffic and Phased Construction
Holding Graz assures the public that extensive replacement traffic plans have been in progress for a year to minimize the impact on commuters. Project manager Bernd Fiedler explains that the construction work within the city will be executed in three distinct phases, each with its own set of challenges for passengers. These phases are designed to optimize workflow and reduce the overall duration of the project.
This large-scale infrastructure project comes at a time when cities across Europe are investing heavily in public transportation. Such as, Vienna, Austria, is currently expanding its U-Bahn network, while Berlin, Germany, is upgrading its tram system. these investments reflect a growing recognition of the importance of sustainable transportation in urban areas.
Looking Ahead: A More efficient Graz
While the immediate future presents challenges, these infrastructure improvements are expected to significantly enhance the efficiency and capacity of Graz’s public transportation network in the long run. The new tram line and the renovated Archduke Johann-Bridge will contribute to a more sustainable and accessible city for residents and visitors alike.
