Google’s Response and Battery Replacement Offer
Google defended their update, stating it was aimed at improving the stability of the battery’s performance. Despite this, they acknowledged that it might lead to shorter intervals between charges.
To address user concerns, Google offered to provide compensation, including a free battery swap, a $50 (£40) cash refund, or a $100 (£80) store credit towards another Pixel device.
User Frustration and Confusion
However, many users are still frustrated as they believe they are not eligible for the free repair option. One user expressed their disappointment on Reddit, saying, “My Pixel 4a won’t stay charged for more than an hour any more. I wasn’t eligible for the free repair. Makes zero sense.”
Another user echoed this sentiment, noting, “Got the update since today. Battery life before the update got worse during the last 2 years or so but with the update, it got even worse. In the car, I can’t load it anymore. It stagnates.”
Varied Opinions Among Users
Not all users are experiencing the same issues. One user reported, “Updated this morning and did not notice any difference (so far). Then I stumbled in here and was surprised by everyone else’s problems.”
Technical Insight into the Update
Hector Martin, a developer at Asahi Linux, shed light on the technical aspects of the update. The new version reduced the maximum charge voltage of the Pixel’s battery from 4.45V to 3.95V.
Additionally, the update eliminated the adaptive charging feature, which usually slowed charging to preserve battery health. The estimated charging time and the battery percentage displayed in the status bar have also been removed.

Google’s New AI Tool
The update comes shortly after Google introduced a new AI tool called Ask for Me. This feature scours the internet for information about businesses, including pricing and availability, and can even book appointments on behalf of users.
Although promising, Ask for Me is still in the testing phase, so users may need to wait before using it.
Conclusion: Moving Forward
Google’s recent update appears to have caused unprecedented issues for many Pixel users, impacting their daily lives significantly due to poor battery performance. While the company has offered some compensation, the satisfactory resolution seems to be elusive for some affected customers.
As tech enthusiasts continue to voice their concerns and opinions, it remains to be seen if Google will make further adjustments to the update or provide more specific resolutions for users facing battery problems.
