Google Messages Introduces Bolder Read Receipts in Upcoming Redesign
Google Messages, already undergoing a significant redesign, has introduced a more noticeable change to its read receipts feature. In a recent update, the design has been adjusted to make the indicator stand out more prominently, especially in dark themes. This change aids visibility, although it might appear somewhat bold for shorter messages.
Old vs. New Design
The original design of the read receipt indicators had a circular background matching the message bubble, with white checkmarks and ellipsis in dark mode. However, the latest update switches to a white background for the read receipts, making them much more visible.
Old vs. New

Understanding the Redesign
The read receipts redesign in Google Messages began in August. One significant change is the relocation of the indicator from the bottom-right corner of the message bubble. Users can now view timestamps and end-to-end encryption status by swiping left.
Ellipsis | Sending |
Single check with ring | Sent |
Double check with ring | Delivered |
Double check solid circle | Read |
Visual Impact
The new design enhances the visibility of read receipts, particularly in dark themes. With the read receipts now having a white background, they stand out more clearly, aiding in user experience. However, the switch to a more prominent design might seem somewhat bold for messages that are brief.
