A Prague Icon Returns
After a brief hiatus that began in the first half of 2024, the Golden Cross delicatessen, a beloved Prague institution, has once again opened its doors. the reopening marks a new chapter for the establishment, featuring a revitalized interior and a modified menu.
The revamped Golden Cross boasts a contemporary interior design, a departure from its previous aesthetic. While the core of the delicatessen experience remains, the menu has been adjusted, particularly concerning its sandwich offerings.Sandwiches are priced between 49 to 79 Czech crowns, catering to a range of tastes and budgets.
Customers can find classic options like cheese and ham sandwiches at the lower end of the price range, while more elaborate choices such as the “Connoisseur” or “Hawaii Chicken” sandwiches are available for a slightly higher price. Premium selections, like the “Chicken Mafia,” represent the top tier of the sandwich menu. Beyond sandwiches, the Golden Cross also features a selection of salads, coffee (including Flat White for 90 crowns), and beer (Krušovice Bohém for 89 crowns).
Target Audience: Locals and Tourists Alike?
The question remains: is the Golden Cross primarily targeting local residents or the influx of tourists that Prague sees year-round? During a recent visit, tourists appeared to be the predominant clientele, with staff initially addressing customers in English. However, local Czechs where also observed ordering sandwiches, suggesting a mixed customer base. According to the staff,it’s currently arduous to definitively determine which group contributes more to the delicatessen’s sales.
Prague, a city steeped in history and culture, attracts millions of tourists annually. According to the Czech Statistical Office, tourism contributes significantly to the city’s economy, with food and beverage services playing a vital role. The Golden Cross’s location in a central area frequented by both locals and tourists positions it well to cater to both demographics.
The Legacy of Vladimír Trček
News of the reopening was initially met with excitement, with some reports suggesting the return of original owner/operator Vladimír Trček. Though, Trček clarified that while he provided guidance and shared his expertise with the new Czech operators, he is not directly involved in the day-to-day management of the Golden Cross.
