Global Fight League Draft Recap: A Mixed Bag of Futures

On Friday night, the Global Fight League held its inaugural draft, with its six teams selecting 20 fighters across 10 weight classes. Notable among the picks was former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, who was chosen as the first overall pick for Team Dubai. The event saw 12 former UFC champions and numerous other top names in MMA. Now that the teams are known, let’s review the draft and assess which teams stand out as frontrunners for success.

Team Dubai

Dubai kicked off the draft by selecting Tyron Woodley, followed by Abubakar Nurmagomedov and Derek Brunson. While Woodley’s inclusion might raise eyebrows given his age and recent career struggles, the team capitalized on subsequent rounds, securing Tofiq Musayev and Damir Ismagulov for the lightweight division. Their picks in the heavyweight and other weight classes also proved strong, suggesting they could win several more divisions.

Despite clear weaknesses, particularly in the women’s divisions, Team Dubai boasts the strongest overall roster among the six teams.

Grade: A-
