A Roman Renaissance: Giorgio Returns with “Schegge”
Giorgio, a distinctive voice in contemporary music, has released his fourth studio album, “Schegge” (Splinters), on Bomba Dischi/Sony Music. Penned between December 2022 and October 2024,the album marks a return to Rome, the city where Giorgio Poti,as he’s known in the registry, spent his formative years. After a 17-year absence, Rome’s influence is palpable in this new work.
The Genesis of “Schegge”: An Expressive Explosion
In a recent interview, giorgio described the album’s origin:
Like my previous records, “Schegge” was born from an expressive need, a desire to create something from within.
But how does “Schegge” differ from his previous work,”rubber-tap”? Giorgio explains with a laugh:
Four more years. Four years of events, adventures, life episodes, meetings, relationships with many other people.
This evolution is evident in the album’s themes and sonic landscape.
Decoding the Title: “Schegge” as Continuous Movement
the title “Schegge,” meaning splinters, is deliberate. Giorgio elaborates:
I wanted to convey a feeling of explosion. An explosion from which everything begins, from which another life springs. but it doesn’t end there; we are constantly exploding, continuously giving life to something else. “schegge” represents a continuous movement outward.
This concept of constant evolution and outward movement permeates the album’s core.
Track Deep Dive: Unpacking Key Songs
The album features intriguing titles like “There is no life above 3000 Kelvin” and “Les Jeux Sont Faits.” Giorgio sheds light on their meanings.
“There is no life above 3000 Kelvin”: A Matter of Light
Giorgio explains the technical aspect of the title:
Firstly, it’s a technical term. Kelvin is a unit of temperature measurement. I’m very sensitive to cold lights. So, for example, in my house, I prefer warm lights, which tend to be those under 3000 Kelvin.
This preference for warmer tones extends metaphorically into the song’s themes.
“Les Jeux Sont Faits”: A French connection
The French phrase “Les Jeux sont Faits,” meaning “the games are made,” is a common expression. Giorgio shares its significance:
It’s a French saying widely used in Italy. It’s an expression known to everyone, even if very arduous to write. I’ve been to France several times, and I must say that I have a French musician friend who greatly assisted with this album, providing crucial supervision.
That friend is laurent Brancowitz of the band Phoenix, adding an international dimension to the album’s creation.
“An Adjective, a verb, a Word”: A Song of Farewell
Giorgio reveals the personal story behind “An Adjective, a Verb, a Word”:
Unlike my usual process, I wrote it promptly after an intense love story I experienced. I didn’t let too much time pass. It speaks of an intense, deeply felt, and… sad farewell.
The immediacy of the emotion is palpable in the song’s raw honesty.
Global Influences: Travel and Musical Evolution
Giorgio’s travels across Europe, including Italy, England, and Germany, have profoundly shaped his music. He reflects on his time in London:
In London, I studied music and, above all, started writing songs. And I also had my first band! I was there from 20 to 27 years old; I remember it as a good training period. Than everything I learned, I put it in the songs.
These experiences have contributed to his unique sound and songwriting style.
Rome’s Enduring Influence
despite his travels, Rome holds a special place in Giorgio’s heart:
I was born in Novara, and when I was about 2 years old, I moved to the capital with my family. In the early years of adolescence, I approached the world of music. From that moment on, my life was focused on this.
The city’s vibrant artistic scene played a crucial role in his musical growth.
Dream Collaborations and Future Aspirations
When asked about potential collaborations, Giorgio expressed his admiration for:
Panda Bear, an American musician who experiments a lot.
This choice reflects Giorgio’s own experimental approach to music.
