AGI – The withdrawal of 12,000 US troops from Germany will “weigh on relations” between Berlin and Washington. German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said this, speaking with Passauer Neue Presse. “Now we must ensure that this gap, which is created through the removal of US soldiers, is rebalanced and closed,” added Seehofer. Defense Secretary Mark Esper announced on Wednesday that some 12,000 of the total 36,000 soldiers stationed in Germany will be deployed partly to Italy and Belgium, partly to other countries, partly to be relocated to the United States again.
The Greens group leader at the Bunedstag, Katrin Goering-Eckardt, also spoke out critically about Washington’s decision: “It would be better for the Americans to withdraw their atomic weapons from Germany, rather than their soldiers”, a move that according to the exponent of the environmental party, it is neither in the interest of NATO nor of the USA. “Indeed, this choice of Trump weighs heavily on transatlantic relations.”
Even harder the SPD group leader at the Bundestag, Rolf Muetzenich, who, speaking with the Sueddeutsche Zeitung, accuses the American president of a policy “made of arbitrariness and pressure”, which “cannot be the foundation of a partnership collaboration” . And this is the reason why, according to the Social Democrat exponent, “the cooperation on armaments will have to be assessed in a different light” between the two countries.
