Gérard Depardieu Faces Sexual assault Trial in Paris Amidst Protests

Actor Arrives at Court met by Demonstrations

Gérard Depardieu’s arrival at the paris courthouse was marked by a vocal feminist presentation. Protesters chanted slogans such as Victims, we believe you; rapists, we see you and Do you touch one? We all react, underscoring the gravity of the accusations against the actor.

The Charges: Sexual Assault and Harassment

The seventy-six-year-old actor, known for his extensive filmography, is facing trial for sexual assault and harassment. While approximately twenty women have reportedly accused Depardieu of inappropriate behavior, this marks the first instance of a case reaching the courtroom. The current trial focuses on allegations from two women, who claim the incidents occured during the 2021 filming of The Green Shutters, directed by Jean Becker [[3]]. The accusations include reports of lewd remarks and harassment.

Defense Denies All Allegations

Prior to the hearing, Depardieu’s lawyer, Jeremie Assous, asserted his client’s innocence. All the accusations are false, Assous stated, expressing confidence that the trial would reveal the truth. He added, This process will allow us to compare all the accusations with reality… we will thus be able to demonstrate impartially, objective and undeniable that all the accusations are false. Depardieu has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

Depardieu’s Public Denial

In an open letter published in Le Figaro in October 2023, Depardieu addressed the allegations directly. Never, but never, I have abused a woman, he wrote, maintaining his innocence in the face of mounting accusations.

the Charlotte Arnould Case: A Separate Rape Allegation

Adding to Depardieu’s legal troubles is a separate case involving actress Charlotte Arnould. Arnould accuses Depardieu of rape and sexual assault, alleging two incidents occurred on August 7 and 13, 2018, at the actor’s Paris residence.

Initial investigations were closed in June 2019 due to insufficient evidence. However, Arnould filed a civil complaint in March 2020, leading to the reopening of the examination by the Paris prosecutor’s office in July 2020.

Trial Postponement and Current Status

The trial, initially scheduled for October of last year, was delayed due to concerns about Depardieu’s health [[1]]. The proceedings are now underway, drawing significant attention both within France and internationally [[2]].
