Genius Sports Acquires Legend: $1.2bn Betting Tech Deal

by Archynetys Sports Desk

Sports data specialist Genius Sports is acquiring Legend for US$1.2 billion, adding new media and advertising capabilities that will bolster its offering for the betting industry.

Key details:

  • Genius to pay US$900 million upfront for Legend, with a further US$300 million dependent on the company meeting certain targets
  • Acquisition expected to close in Q2 2026 after gaining necessary approvals
  • Genius acquired Sport Innovation Lab last year as part of expansion

Context:

This acquisition will allow Genius Sports to add additional media, marketing and advertising capabilities to its portfolio, bringing in additional customers and new sources of predictable revenue.

Legend’s scaled media network and marketing technology directly powers owned-and-operated platforms by suppling content, data and gamification tools to digital platforms, while publications such as Sports Illustrated and Yahoo Sports are among its syndication customers.

These capabilities make it possible to detect when sports fans are researching teams, players, odds and scores and are therefore more likely to place a bet. Legend’s platform then connects users with the most relevant bookmaker, product or advertiser.

Last year, Legend generated 320 million visits from 118 unique players, with two thirds returning on a regular basis.

Comment:

“This deal accelerates our strategic and financial objectives, supercharges fan monetisation, and builds a fully integrated sports and gaming media network,” said Mark Locke, CEO of Genius Sports. “For Genius Sports and our global partners, it delivers more data, more audience, more inventory and greater monetisation of sports fans. The acquisition of Legend will drive higher margins and stronger free cash flow, positioning Genius Sports to immediately transform the market and grow the size and scale of our business.”

“Joining forces with Genius Sports brings together two world-class teams, unlocks unparalleled growth opportunities for our partners and products, and gives us an even stronger platform to scale,” said Nick Kisberg, founder of Legend. “I am immensely proud of what we have built and the decades of hard work that have brought us here today.”
