A Berry Through Time: From Stone Age Snack to Modern Treat
The humble strawberry, a fruit enjoyed worldwide, boasts a history stretching back millennia. Even our Stone Age ancestors savored wild varieties of what we know today as the garden strawberry. However, for centuries, the strawberry remained a relatively small fruit, barely larger than a five-cent coin until the 17th century.
The transformation of the strawberry into the plump, juicy fruit we enjoy today is largely attributed to Dutch gardeners.Around 300 years ago, they inadvertently crossbred local wild strawberries wiht imported American varieties, resulting in a larger, more desirable fruit. This accidental hybridization marked a turning point in strawberry cultivation.
