A top UN official says that nearly 200,000 pallets of food and life-saving supplies are ready to enter Gaza, but warns that lives are being lost every hour due to delays.
A high-ranking United Nations official has issued a stark warning about the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, stating that a massive stockpile of aid is ready to be deployed but is currently being held back. “Right now, nearly 180,000 pallets of food and other life-saving aid stand ready to enter Gaza, the hungriest place on earth,” OCHA spokesperson Jens Laerke told UN News.
According to the spokesperson, these supplies have already been fully funded by international donors and have received all necessary clearances. He emphasized that the aid is “cleared for customs, approved and ready to move.”
“We can get the aid in – promptly, at scale and for as long as necessary,” he stated, while also noting the extreme urgency of the situation. “Time is running out very quickly, and lives are being lost every hour in the Gaza Strip.”
The UN maintains that it has a viable and effective plan for distributing the aid, referencing the previous ceasefire period when substantial amounts of supplies where successfully delivered. During that time, “tens of thousands of trucks entered the blockaded Strip and delivered aid to every person,” according to Laerke.
Multiple aid organizations have raised alarms about the growing risk of widespread famine affecting the more than 2 million people residing in the Gaza Strip.
The situation remains highly volatile as “The Israeli Army, dismissing international calls for a ceasefire, has pursued a devastating offensive in Gaza since October 2023, killing over 54,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children.”
“Right now, nearly 180,000 pallets of food and other life-saving aid stand ready to enter Gaza, the hungriest place on earth.”
Understanding the Crisis in Gaza
The ongoing conflict and blockade have created a complex humanitarian crisis in Gaza, marked by shortages of essential supplies and limited access to basic services. The situation is further complicated by political tensions and security concerns, making aid delivery a significant challenge.
