When author and organic gardener Klaus Lettenberg and his wife Joanna spotted a fisherman’s cottage on the shores of Lake Melvin, they thought they had reached the Garden of Eden. Eden Point, Eden, in fact.
“We drove past it and when we saw the ‘for sale’ sign, we came back,” Krause said. “We got out of the car and looked around. The local heron was standing on the waterfront. That heron was still here. There were two otters running around and there were kingfishers, birds you’ll never see, and the ones in the lake outside. Salmon, we were blown away by the natural wonders around us, it was just a dream,” explained Krause.
The site is not far from Rosingfer, north of Leitrim, and Lake Melvin lies between the county and Fermanagh. It is 12 kilometers long and 3 kilometers wide. Melvin is a famous fishing lake known for no less than three different species that are entirely unique to Lake Melvin. The snail-fed gillaroo trout can’t be found anywhere else. It is characterized by dark red spots and has a gizzard used to digest snail shells.
Also in Melvin is the Sonaghan trout, known for its distinctive black spots and elongated pectoral muscles. Melvin Char completes the trio. The lake also has trout (they eat other trout) and salmon.
Before buying Eden Point, Klaus and his wife had lived at the local Milkwood Farm, a 10ac property in Tawley, where they had a vegetable garden, a greenhouse and raised animals. Originally from Germany, Klaus arrived in Leitrim in 1999 as head gardener at the Rosingfer Organic Centre.
Over time, his career in organic gardening developed and he began teaching and consulting. His commissions included the restoration of the gardens of Lissadell House in Co Sligo. He also published four books on gardening, which were very successful Vegetables in the Irish Garden.
“We decided to buy Eden Point when we saw it in 2012. It is owned by the people who created the Rosinver Fisheries Syndicate and comes with membership in the syndicate, which gives us access to the boats whenever we want,” Krauss Say.
The Lettenbergs and their five children found themselves with two houses and began gradually moving from Tawley to Eden Point. “We started by doing a very basic job on the house to make it habitable. Then when we sold the Tawley place, we could invest here.
Around 2014, they started an extensive renovation of the house in an effort to make it energy efficient and sustainable. “We took everything down at that point,” Krause said. “We put the floors, replaced the windows, and insulated everything. We installed a heat pump and underfloor heating to make the place very comfortable and comfortable. pretty.”
Joanna took over the interior design, and Klaus credits her for all the work. He was delighted with the finished product including the house, private dock, houseboat and boat dock.
The property is situated in 2.6ac mature woodland. Eden Point is like a small peninsula jutting out of the lake. The house was built on this point, with lake views from three sides. “You can see the lake from almost every window, and every window is different, every time you look at it, it’s different,” Krause said.
The family founded and ran several businesses from Eden Point. Joanna runs an online business, greenvegetableseeds.com She ran away from the house when the children were young. She now has a shop in Manorhamilton. Their son Thien, though only 15, started his YouTube cooking channel at the age of 10.
A covered balcony runs along a portion of the front of the house, overlooking the lake and leading to the marina. There is another covered balcony porch at the back.
The modern kitchen has a dual electric oven and stove and is centered on the island. It includes a breakfast area with corner seating and double doors to the patio.
The open plan living room features an overhead fireplace with solid fuel stove and connects to the formal dining room with lake views. Floor-to-ceiling windows lead from the living room to the balcony, while the family bathroom and bedroom are reached from an interior corridor corridor outside the dining room.
The sleeping area includes three bedrooms. The master is on the ground floor with a small mezzanine office area overhead with its own windows. It and the second bedroom on the first floor have French doors to the patio, while the third bedroom and landing are on the first floor.
The family bathroom and downstairs bedroom are decorated in a Middle Eastern decor, exemplified by the patterned tiles on the floors and walls.
