East Coast Beaches to Benefit from Real-Time Weather and Marine Data
Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province is set to launch a groundbreaking meteorological fusion service, a first of its kind in South korea, designed to enhance the safety and enjoyment of marine leisure activities along its east coast.Governor Chung kwang-yeol announced the initiative, highlighting its potential to transform how tourists and locals alike experience the region’s beaches.
A Comprehensive Approach to Marine Safety and Recreation
The Meteorological Convergence Service integrates real-time analysis of sixteen key weather parameters, including water temperature, air temperature, wind conditions, and wave height, across 49 beaches on Gangwon’s east coast. This comprehensive data is visually displayed,providing users with an immediate understanding of current conditions.

This initiative builds upon existing cooperation with the Gangwon Regional Meteorological Agency, leveraging their expertise in weather forecasting and marine environmental predictions. The service has been piloted at six major surf spots along the coast.
Boosting Marine Tourism and Events
Gangwon Province intends to actively integrate the weather convergence service into a variety of marine leisure programs. This includes large-scale beach festivals, surfing competitions, marine sports events, and even marine healing activities. The goal is to provide participants with a safer and more informed experience.
For example,organizers of the upcoming Surfari
surfing competition in Sokcho are planning to use the service to optimize event scheduling and ensure participant safety. Similarly, the Sea Breeze Healing Programme
in Goseong will utilize the data to tailor activities to specific weather conditions, maximizing the therapeutic benefits for participants.
Phased Rollout and Official Launch
Following a period of testing in early April, the Meteorological Convergence Service is scheduled to officially launch in mid-April. This phased approach allows for fine-tuning and ensures a smooth transition to full operation.
