Fuel Duty Changes 2026: Diesel Price Hike

by Archynetys Economy Desk

Rome – Starting from 1 January 2026, a change to the fuel excise duty system will come into force, provided for by the 2026 Budget Bill, which will have direct effects on prices at the pump. The main innovation concerns the alignment of excise duties on petrol and diesel, which will be brought to the same level, overcoming the current differentiation between the two fuels.

In detail, the rate will be set at 672.90 euros per thousand liters for both. This intervention will lead to a reduction in the excise duty on petrol of around 4 cents per litre, while it will lead to an equivalent increase for diesel fuel, which will therefore be more expensive than current levels.

The measure is part of the energy tax revision process also requested at European level, with the aim of reducing the so-called environmentally harmful subsidies, which historically include the more favorable tax treatment reserved for diesel. The intervention, however, will have concrete repercussions above all on motorists, commuter workers and transport companies, for whom diesel still represents the main fuel.

Although the reduction in excise duty on petrol can partially offset the increase in diesel, the overall effect risks resulting in an increase in mobility costs, with possible repercussions on the entire supply chain of goods and services. In areas where the car is often indispensable, the impact could be more pronounced.

The realignment of excise duties therefore represents a significant step in the country’s fiscal and energy policy, destined to generate discussion in the coming months, as citizens and economic operators prepare to face the consequences starting from the new year.
