The Salterio is a Baroque instrument related to the Austrian dulcimer. It has a flat, trapezoidal sound box over which strings are stretched that are plucked or struck. Franziska Fleischanderl is one of the most internationally renowned interpreters of this instrument, which experienced a short but intense heyday in the 18th century. Her very personal instrument is a salterio by Michele Barbi from 1725, which is celebrating its 300th birthday this year. In the CD booklet it is listed as a second artist alongside Fleischanderl.

And really: Franziska Fleischanderl passionately shows her instrument from all angles. She has been intensively researching playing techniques and repertoire for ten years. She presents this repertoire – almost exclusively first recordings – on this new CD “solo un salterio”. The title can be read in many ways: On the one hand, it is the first solo Salterio CD in the world with a historical instrument and historically correct playing style. On the other hand, due to the different playing styles, it is hard to imagine that it is just one instrument – it sounds very different from piece to piece.

Ultimately, the title is also an expression of the deep personal connection between the performer and the instrument. Franziska Fleischanderl writes about this album: “For me, this is probably the most personal of all recordings: in quiet togetherness with my instrument and myself, in deep connection and devotion, with great gratitude in my heart. It is a situation of musical intimacy and vulnerability in which playing itself becomes a contemplative act of listening. It is not I playing, but Barbi-Salterio is playing with me.”
