France Proposes UN Peacekeepers to Replace Israeli Forces in Lebanon by February 18

by drbyos

France has unveiled a proposal for United Nations peacekeepers, including French troops, to take over key positions in southern Lebanon, ensuring Israeli forces leave by February 18, as announced by Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on Thursday.

According to Israeli media, the U.S. has cleared a “long-term” Israeli troop presence in southern Lebanon, as sources told Reuters that Israel had requested an extension to the February 18 deadline.

Context of the Withdrawal

The current situation stems from a truce deal brokered by Washington in November, granting Israel 60 days to withdraw from southern Lebanon. Israeli forces had been engaged in a ground operation against Hezbollah militants since early October.

Details of the Truce Deal

Under the agreement, Hezbollah militants were set to leave the zone, and Lebanese forces were expected to deploy simultaneously within the same period.

France’s Proposal

Foreign Minister Barrot stated, “We have formulated a proposal that can meet Israel’s security expectations, particularly regarding their intention to remain longer at certain points on the Blue Line.”

UN-Backed Solution

Barrot emphasized that the proposal involves UNIFIL peacekeepers, including French forces, taking over observation points. The United Nations has endorsed the strategy.

Convincing Israel

“It is our task now to persuade the Israelis that this solution will facilitate a complete and final withdrawal,” Barrot noted after a conference on Syria in Paris.

Extended Deadline

The initial withdrawal deadline was later extended from January 26 to February 18. Recent reports suggest that Israel seeks an additional 10 days to remain in five positions in the south.

The situation in Lebanon remains tense, with the proposed UN involvement aiming to bridge the gap between Israeli security needs and Lebanon’s sovereignty. This complex scenario underscores the ongoing challenges of maintaining regional stability.

Concluding Thoughts

France’s proposal reflects a strategic shift and a commitment to peace in the region, potentially paving the way for a harmonious transition. Whether the plan will be accepted by all parties involved remains to be seen.

As the situation unfolds, close monitoring will be essential to ensure that the withdrawal process proceeds smoothly and that peace in the region becomes a reality.
