Ford, Iran & Toilets: The Strange Strike Story

by Archynetys World Desk

During the past hours, social media users have circulated posts claiming that widespread malfunctions in the bathrooms on board the US aircraft carrier Gerald Ford caused the delay of a possible US strike against Iran, coinciding with the carrier’s heading to the Middle East as part of an escalating military deployment.

Some calculations suggested that about 80% of the toilets on board the carrier were out of service, which – according to the allegations – led to an operational crisis for the crew, and forced engineering teams to work long hours to address the defect.

Gerald Ford: Allegations of malfunctions delay a strike against Iran

The posts included video clips and pictures that showed water leaks and maintenance work in sanitation facilities, with the implication that they were from inside the carrier, and linked them to what was said to be a delay in carrying out a military strike.

However, verification operations showed that some of the clips in circulation date back to the year 2023, and were previously published in contexts unrelated to the carrier or current military movements, including a clip of a blockage in a civilian drainage network, and another that speaks in general about the difficulties of the drainage systems on some ships.

NPR previously addressed, in a report dated January 17, 2026, problems with the sanitation system known as “VCHT” on board the carrier, pointing to technical challenges related to design and misuse. However, a US Navy spokesman confirmed – according to the report – that these malfunctions did not affect the ship’s combat readiness, and that the periods of downtime were limited and subject to ongoing maintenance.

Maritime tracking data shows that the carrier continued its operational deployment normally, and crossed the Strait of Gibraltar on February 21, 2026 on its course towards the region, without an official announcement of any delay related to technical malfunctions.

The circulation of these narratives comes in light of the escalation of tension between Washington and Tehran, as technical or logistical details sometimes turn into material for political interpretations on social media platforms.
